Telecom fiber optics: These 51 cities are now getting fast internet

Telekom has promised 2.5 million new connections with fiber optics per year. And she follows words with deeds. After naming almost 1 million households in the spring that will be supplied in the coming months, another 250,000 households will now be added. You can soon have a high-speed connection with fiber optics right into your own four walls.
But mind you: When marketing starts, the connections are not yet built. However, Telekom is currently expanding fiber optics in many other places in Germany. In the locations mentioned below, the expansion is to begin "shortly". Overall, Telekom is setting up more than 2,200 network distributors for the expansion projects and requires around 1,800 kilometers of civil engineering work. "We are significantly increasing the pace of fiber optic expansion," says Walter Goldenits, Head of Technology at Telekom Germany. Fiber to the Home (FTTH), i.e. fiber optics to the home, is the standard for the future.
"In terms of price, the new fiber optic connections are no more expensive than the previous connections," says Srini Gopalan, who is responsible for Telekom's German business. However, this only applies in comparison with a connection via VDSL at Telekom. Because the variety of tariffs for a fiber optic connection is still very limited. Only 1&1 currently has a corresponding contract with Telekom in order to be able to provide you with a connection via Telekom fiber optics. Here you can book the connections as an alternative to Telekom. Vodafone and O2 also have access to Telekom fiber optics by contract, but do not yet have any products on offer. In the medium term, too, there will be greater competition for DSL than for fiber optic lines.
Fiber optics: Telecom expansion will start soon in these cities
The marketing of the connections has started in these 51 locations. If you live in one of these places, it is worth checking availability with 1&1 or Telekom. This is how you find out whether your apartment is included in the expansion. As always, this swing is not about complete cities that are meant.

Once the connections have been built, they currently deliver up to 1 Gbit/s downstream and 200 Mbit/s upstream. Technically even more is possible. If you live in the expansion area, you can now pre-order the fiber optic connection from Telekom or 1&1. Every owner who connects his house with fiber optics increases the value of his property.
For tenants, however, the following applies: nothing works without the owner. We have put together a detailed guide for you on how to behave correctly if the fiber optic expansion in your apartment is pending. The laying of the connection itself is usually free of charge as part of the pre-marketing.
