A true benchmark for urban helmets from the German brand Abus, the Hyban has evolved into version 2.0 with a refined design and improved ventilation. What confirms its status as a safe bet.
With its rigid ABS shell bonded to an expanded polystyrene structure, the Abus Hyban 2.0 aims for a certain robustness while controlling its selling price (€79.95). Available in many colors, it adopts a contemporary aspect with its format oscillating between the bowl and the jet, as well as a small cap.
The Hyban 2.0 is available in three sizes corresponding to head circumferences between 52 and 63 cm: M (52 to 58 cm), L (56 to 61 cm) and XL (58 to 63 cm).
Without stunning with its finishes, the Hyban 2.0 from Abus still looks great. It turns out to be well built and indeed feels solid due to the rigidity of its 2mm thick ABS thermoplastic polymer shell. The helmet is however quite thick (about 2 cm) and still weighs 470 g in size L on our scale.
Our chrome version stands out in the urban landscape that is usually quite wise. While this finish is a real fingerprint magnet, it's pretty easy to clean regardless. Beware all the same of micro-scratches, as on any shiny plastic surface.
Comfort is ensured by foam inserts covered with mesh fabric, simply held by small Velcro discs on the expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell. About 8 mm thick, they are quite wide and thus distribute the weight well on the skull.
The occipital adjustment is ensured by an adjustable plastic frame via a notched wheel. This gradually tightens the back and then the sides of the head, ensuring good support for the helmet which would otherwise tend to float, in particular for a head with a cranial perimeter located at the start of the helmet's recommendation range (56 to 61 cm for a size L). Long-haired cyclists will be able to pass their hair through a space left free above the wheel.
The chin strap of the helmet is ensured by a strap in flexible fabric, all that is most common. It adjusts very classically by sliding, and locks just as classically with a pliers-type clip buckle. We appreciate that the latter is attached to a foam protection to provide comfort and avoid any pinching of the skin when closing it.
Often the poor relation of urban helmets, ventilation has not been neglected on the Hyban 2.0. For the air supply, this helmet benefits from three large front openings protected by an anti-insect net and two other side openings. There are three other very wide openings on the top and no less than five on the back to ensure good air circulation.
The openings cannot be closed and it will therefore be necessary to wear a hooded garment large enough to protect yourself from the rain, or to acquire a protective rain cover.
Since a cyclist is rarely too visible in town, we appreciate the LED rear light of the Hyban 2.0. Made of soft rubber, it is nicely integrated into the hull. It is turned on by pressing its central button. The light then emits a fixed red light which can become flashing if the button is pressed a second time. Waterproof, very easy to remove and works with a common CR2032 flat battery in stores.
Although it is rigid and very ventilated, the Hyban 2.0 is no less protective. Certimoov gave it an overall rating of 3.5 stars out of 5. The helmet scores well in rear, frontal oblique and side oblique 1 impacts, obtaining 4/5 on these tests despite the absence of protection technology. particular (Mips, etc.).
On the other hand, it is more difficult in classic side impact (3/5) and especially in frontal and oblique side impact 2 (2/5), suggesting that its cap is not particularly ideal in terms of impact absorption – without for might as well make the helmet dangerous.

Integrated led light.

Anti-insect net.

Weak points

Not the lightest.

Conclusion

How does grading work?

Well built, well equipped and obtaining a good score in the Certimoov safety test, despite the absence of special protection technology, the Abus Hyban 2.0 does not suffer from any particular fault, apart from its rather high weight. It's a good headset that has the merit of remaining affordable and comes in many colors to satisfy the greatest number.
